The Archdiocese of Canada is a small, humble, but nevertheless historic part of our Autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America. Upon his appointment as Metropolitan-Archbishop and Primate of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in the U.S.A. in 1985, subsequent to the repose of Vladyka Hryhorij (Ohychuk), our founder in the New World, the ever-memorable Metropolitan Andrei (Prazsky) was named not only Archbishop of New York but also Metropolitan of All Canada. In 2000, His Eminence Vladyka Andrei (Brennan) was named to succeed the first Metropolitan Andrei of Canada in this Canadian post by then-Metropolitan Alexis (Nizza), President of the Governing Synod of the UAOC in the USA, successor to Vladyka Andrei Prazsky, who had reposed suddenly and tragically in 1990.
The work of the Canadian Archdiocese is focused in three areas:
1. The ongoing development of ministries to immigrant communities in the Greater Toronto Area, including those of Bulgarian, Hungarian, Georgian, Latin American, and Korean heritage, along with ministries to English-speaking communities in the London, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec regions;
2. The ongoing development of the monastery of St Ireney of Lyons in Kent County, New Brunswick. This 6 hectare (15 acre) property has been dedicated to Christ and His Church for the establishment of monastic houses for celibate men and women, as well as community houses for married couples, alongside a retreat centre open to all the faithful.
3. The Canadian Archdiocese also supports the ministry of the Vicar General for Jerusalem and the Holy Land, the Rev. Dr. Ami Ran, who serves as our jurisdiction's special representative to the Mother Church of Jerusalem as well as in a ministry of counseling and support to monastics in the sacred places.
The Archdiocese of Canada, under the leadership of its Major Archbishop, His Eminence Vladyka Andrei, is administered in the "sobornopravna" (i.e., "council-ruled") model of the UAOC under the able advisory leadership of its senior clergyman, the Very Rev. Archpriest Stephen Arenburg, and its senior lay leader, the honourable Archon Prof. J.A. Christopher Delaney. His Eminence is assisted in his daily work by the archdiocesan chancellor, the Stavrophore Nun, Mother Anastasia (Niebler).
All Orthodox Christians within Canada are welcome to seek pastoral aid and comfort within our Canadian Archdiocese.
