FROM THE DESK OF BISHOP MARTIN dePORRES

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Diocese of the Midwest. Periodically we will share news and events regarding our Diocese. Hopefully you will return to our simple page and keep informed.

August 15, 2005:  We have initiated our newest ministry at the Monastery of Our Lady of The Most Blessed Sacrament in Coleman, Michigan. St. Kateri Home and Helping Hand has been inaugurated and have its first two residents.
St. Kateri’s Home and Helping Hand, a ministry of Our Lady of The Most Blessed Sacrament Monastery, is dedicated to providing our men with a clean & sober living environment structured to facilitate their transition into both the recovering community and society at large. The goal for our residents is to provide them with affordable clean & sober housing which will nurture the development of a healthy recovering support system.
St. Kateri’s Home is not restricted to those who have alcohol or drug issues, but meet other criteria as well. This may include referrals from the Probation Department as well as Community Mental Health. Therefore  the 12 step program may not be required of some residents. These will have a program that meets their individual needs.
We have developed a 3-phase program, which, while providing structure and support, will also guide them into developing the tools necessary to eventually live in recovery on their own. We do require residents to attend 12 step meetings, abide by the curfew, attend our weekly house meeting and 12-step meeting, and adhere to our common sense house rules. Religious services here at the monastery are open to all who wish to attend. Attendance is not required to be a resident here. Our recovering director is an Orthodox Catholic Priest who is a member of AA since 1983 and will offer guidance and support. We feel that the combination of these elements greatly increase their chances of achieving continuous recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism.
Located in Isabella County in Michigan, the monastery is 13 miles from the city of Mt. Pleasant, where the Alano Club and most AA & NA meetings are held, nestled in a beautiful and peaceful farming community. The monastery has been here since November 3, 1997. Our guest rooms have 2 or 3 to a room. In most cases transportation is provided as needed to meetings, etc. We hope St. Kateri’s Home and Helping Hand is an answer to clean & sober housing needs.
Our Lady of The Most Blessed Sacrament Monastery is a non-profit, Church corporation organized under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. St. Kateri’s Home and Helping Hand is a ministry of the monastery and the monks.
Donations to Our Lady of The Most Blessed Sacrament Monastery are welcomed and are tax deductible as provided by law. Checks should be made out to:

OUR LADY OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT or
Little Brothers of Jesus

We appreciate your interest in our cause and, hope that we may be able to help someone close to you, if and when that person needs help.
